How Often Should I Use a Hair Mask?

How Often Should I Use a Hair Mask?

Hair masks - deep conditioning treatments - are formulated to deliver moisture and improve your hair and scalp condition. To achieve the best possible results, it’s important to know how - and how often - to use them.

Generally, you're advised to use your hair mask once or twice a week, but the ideal frequency will really depend on your hair type and its current condition – and on your age. If your hair is particularly dry or damaged, you’ll benefit from using a deep-conditioning treatment more often, whereas healthy or oilier hair will need less frequent applications.

Why use a hair mask?

As we age, many of us find that our hair is becoming thinner, weaker, and more brittle than before.

Hormones, stress and chemical treatments/colouring play their part but so too does heat styling, which damages not just the outer layers of your strands but their inner cortex and roots, too. Add to this that your scalp skin becomes thinner and dryer over time and you can see why your head could use some help.

A deep conditioning treatment:
• Nurtures scalp health
• Helps roots stay healthier and strong for longer = better growth
• Improves the hair’s appearance and manageability

Giving you hair that's:
• Healthier
• Shinier
• Softer
• Stronger
• Smoother
• More resistant to damage

How often should you use a mask?

Hair masks are designed to deliver potent concentrations of hydrating and protective ingredients, but more more isn’t necessarily better.

So, how often is often enough? Start with once a week and see how your hair responds over the course of a month – we’re all different and you’ll soon see whether things are improving as you’d like them to.

If your hair and scalp are still not feeling great, adjust the frequency and, again, assess how things are going. This could mean using more than once a week or less – it will depend on your hair type. Once your hair’s condition is better, once a week for any hair type will be enough.

Dry - If your hair is dry, it will absorb moisture like a sponge, so it makes sense that you’ll need to deep condition it more often and maybe also use a little extra of your chosen product. If that’s you, try conditioning twice a week to start with and adjust as needed.

Damaged - Hair masks can’t restore the broken bonds of split, damaged hair but they can help defend it against additional damage. Here we’d recommend trimming off damaged ends as soon as possible and using a conditioning mask twice a week to start with.

Frizzy - In the case of frizz, the culprit is hair cuticles that are raised instead of flat. Raised cuticles can be caused by temperature changes, medication or chemical treatments and can make your hair more susceptible to damage, too. When cuticles lie flat, your hair appears smooth, and it retains moisture better. Using a hair treatment once or twice a week will smooth your cuticles and protect your hair. Adjust your usage frequency if you need to.

Fine and Oily - As we age our levels of the hormone dihydrotestosterone cause our hair follicles to shrink, which leads to thinner strands and more scalp showing. This can mean that there are fewer hairs to absorb excess sebum, leading to oily hair. If is you, then you might be wondering whether you even need to use a hydrating mask? The answer is still yes, but differently. Once a week or even every other week is probably going to be enough and you should focus the product on the ends of your hair, not the scalp, using small amounts only.

Curly - If you have curly hair your hair can take more applications. Curly hair tends to be more frizzy and dryer because it’s harder for the scalp’s natural oils to reach and cover those curls. Using a mask twice a week will give you bouncier, smoother, better defined curls.

Why Choose Hairfix Root to Tip Hair Improver?

Many hair masks are designed to be used on wet hair in place of your regular conditioner but Root to Tip is different. It is used on dry hair and preferably left on overnight, which means that you don’t need to use as much and more of it penetrates your hair (right through to the cortex and down to the rots), rather than being rinsed away. That makes it great value!

Hairfix Root to Tip Hair Improver is formulated to rehydrate and rebalance the hair, roots and scalp to give strength, vitality, nourishment and protection. It was developed with the challenges of how the hair and scalp change with age in mind and is suitable for all hair types.

Hairfix Root to Tip includes four key high quality, tried and tested ingredients:
• three levels of phytokeratin to strengthen and improve the elasticity of your hair strands, making it less prone to breakage and protecting the scalp.
• slow-release caffeine to stimulate the hair follicles and maintain their productivity, helping your hair growth remain healthy.
• hyaluronic to keep the hair and scalp moist, supple and nourished.
• hydrolised silk protein to give shine, body and manageability.

Hairfix Root to Tip Hair Improver is simple to incorporate into your haircare regime in one of two ways:

1. Apply to dry hair before you go to sleep and wash out the following day. It is oil-free so it won’t leave marks or stains on your pillow. Overnight is a great choice if your hair is really dry or frizzy.

2. Apply to dry hair five minutes or more before showering, then wash and condition as usual.

You can also use a pump or two of Root to Tip in place of your usual conditioner if your hair is feeling super-dry.

Hairfix Root to Tip Hair Improver is available in 200ml or 500ml bottles, providing 6 or 12+ months supply, depending on usage frequency and quantity.
