Heading for the sun? Don’t forget your perfect travel companion.
If you’re lucky enough to be heading for some winter sun, here are some tips to ensure that you protect your hair as well as your skin.
We all think “sun cream” as we head for the sun but even though winter sunshine can sometimes feel less severe than in high summer, it can be as damaging to your hair as it can to your skin. So, how can Hairfix help protect hair? We asked one of our team, Jacquie, who was recently lucky enough to spend ten days in Morocco about her holiday haircare regime.
“My hair is highlighted and it’s also now greying, so it takes a bit of extra effort to keep it in good condition, particularly on holiday where it can easily end up feeling dry and brittle.
Two real benefits of holidays for my hair are firstly that I rarely use a hair dryer – I just clip it up and leave it to dry naturally – and secondly that it’s so much easier to rinse your hair in cool water in a hot climate!
My go-to Hairfix holiday product is Silk+. I make sure I apply it to dry hair before I go into the sun and reapply it after I swim, having given my hair a quick rinse in fresh water – it’s fine to apply it to damp hair. I shampoo with a mild shampoo and conditioner in the evening (this holiday I used Total Detox & Recovery for dry hair) and run a little more Silk + through towel dried hair which keeps it smooth and under control. The result is hair that feels silky smooth.”
Any other tips?
“I do try to wear a hat of some sort when I remember – just for that extra layer of protection – although I have to admit that I also quite like those extra – free! – highlights that the sun gives me, so I’m not really all that angelic!”
How does Silk + work?
The sun’s rays help to activate the silk protein and keratin in this deep moisturising treatment, ensuring silky softness. Silk + also protects hair from UV and helps reduce sun damage. Thoroughly drenching your hair in fresh water before and after swimming will dilute the effects of the salt or pool chemicals so that they cause less damage to your locks. Rinse your hair again after swimming and re-apply Hairfix Silk + as many times as necessary during the day.

Why you should be wearing silk this summer
Silk + will help you avoid the nasty dry, bleached feeling of post-holiday hair that comes from UV exposure and swimming in chlorine or saltwater.
Just as your skin needs good UV protection and extra moisturising in the summer months, so too does your hair.
HERE'S HOW TO USE SILK + FOR SUPER SILKY LOCKS - AND SAVE £3 WHEN YOU BUY YOURS!
Before you head out into the sunshine ~ distribute several pumps worth of Hairfix Silk+ through dry or damp hair and comb through. The sun’s rays help to activate the silk protein and keratin in this deep moisturising treatment, ensuring silky softness. Silk + also protects hair from UV and helps reduce sun damage.
Before & after taking a dip in the pool or the sea ~ thoroughly drench your hair in fresh water. This will dilute the effects of the salt or pool chemicals so that they cause less damage to your locks. Rinse your hair again after swimming and re-apply Hairfix Silk + as many times as necessary during the day.
Calling all curlies: are you plopping?
If you're blessed with curls, “plopping” is the hot news of the day. We take a look at what it’s all about and how it can give you the best curls in town – smooth, defined and with some extra lift.
Many of us curly tops find that our curls are smooth and nicely defined when they’re wet but often they become frizzy and poorly defined when dry. It seems that the all-important step most of us are ignoring is the one between wet and dry and that by simply adopting plopping, you can make every day a good hair day.
In essence, plopping (admittedly a slightly weird word to associate with hair) means adding your favourite styling product to wet hair, ‘dropping’ your hair into a t-shirt, wrapping it into a turban and giving it time.
There are different schools of thought on plopping durations - some people plop for 20-30 minutes, others wait two hours, and some let their hair dry overnight; we suggest you experiment to see what best suits your hair and lifestyle.
Naturally Curly’s website provides a handy illustration of how to plop and what you need but here's an overview:
Decide what to plop with. Luckily, plopping doesn’t equal shopping because it’s highly likely you already have what you need at home – styling products and a t-shirt or a microfibre towel. Ordinary towels aren’t suitable as they absorb a lot of moisture and moisture retention is what you need for lovely smooth, defined curls.
After you’ve washed your hair, scrunch out excess water and apply your leave-in conditioner. Hairfix Silk + Reconditioning Masque is ideal, as is Keratin Smooth, Keratin Straight - don’t worry, it won’t act as a straightener in this scenario).
Lay a T-shirt (long-sleeved works best) or a microfibre towel out on a chair, bed or other flat surface, with the sleeves end closest to you.
Bend forwards and flip your hair downwards, so that all of your hair is in the centre of the towel and on top of your head (a bit as though you're doing a handstand but no gymnastics required!)
Take the flap of fabric that’s furthest away from you (the t-shirt hem), and pull it upwards towards the nape of your neck; then tie the long sleeves of the shirt (or extra fabric of your towel) behind your head in a knot. If you have extra material or used a long-sleeved shirt, wrap the extra length of the sleeves around to the front and tie the ends in a knot to make your turban more secure.
The t-shirt soaks up moisture from your hair without creating frizz, significantly cutting down your drying time. It will also help absorb any excess product, so you don’t end up with hard, crunchy curls.
For those with fine hair or looser waves, plopping can create lift at the roots because your hair is drying on top of your head rather than being weighed down.
If on some days your waves or curls tend to disappear or look limp, this will enhance your curl pattern by scrunching up the curls while they dry.
What our team says
“I’ve often noticed that if I wash my hair and leave it to mostly dry wrapped in a towel, I get a smoother result. Now that I’ve tried the t-shirt and official plopping, I get great curls and great root lift.” Jacquie (shoulder length, loose curls)

Heading for the sun? Here’s How To Protect Your Hair & Keep It In Tip Top Condition
We put a lot of time and effort into making sure we look our best on holiday. If you’d like to look your best afterwards, too, read on.
Here are two top tips that'll help you avoid that nasty dry, bleached feeling of post-holiday hair and ensure that your hair glows just as brilliantly as your tan.
The chlorine in pools and the salt in seawater both have a bleaching effect on your hair. This can leave blondes with a greenish tinge to their hair and cause dark coloured hair to lose its lustre. Chlorine and salt are also incredibly drying and break down the hair's natural keratin - the strong, fibrous protein that is our hair's key ingredient.
Distribute several pumps worth of Hairfix Silk+ Reconditioning Masque through dry or damp hair and comb through. The sun’s rays will actually help to activate the silk protein and Keratin in this deep moisturising treatment, putting the silky softness back into your hair. Silk+ will also help reduce sun damage.
BEFORE & AFTER YOU SWIM
Thoroughly drench your hair in fresh water. This will dilute the effects of the salt or pool chemicals so that they cause less damage to your locks. Rinse your hair again after swimming and re-apply Silk + as many times as necessary during the day.
